Sell Your Mobile App Before They Download
Most solopreneurs treat their app store like an afterthought. Here's what converts instead.
Hey, product-preneur!
You just spent months building your app, only to watch people scroll past it in the app store like it doesn’t exist. 🥲
If you take some time to make sure you hit everything on this checklist, you won’t regret it. This will convert casual browsers into downloads, so you can start making revenue instead of regret.
What's bubbling this week:
Your app store page is your movie trailer. People decide in 3 seconds whether they care. Most solo builders blow it with generic screenshots.
Quick test: show your app store page to a stranger and ask, "What does this app do?" If they hesitate, this issue is for you.
Show actual app screens + clear value props + social proof. Three elements, three seconds, more downloads. (I'll show you how.)
Here’s how I can help:
Async Potion Review — a quick product teardown (website or mobile app) that includes a 15-minute Loom walkthrough and a one-page action plan, delivered within 48 hours.
If I can’t surface three actionable quick wins, you’ll be credited toward a live strategy call.

Potion of the Week
Your App Store Page is Killing Downloads
It's dark, you already ate half your popcorn before the movie starts, but you just witnessed the most badass trailer and you're convinced you have to see it next month.
That's exactly how you want people to feel about your mobile app. Except most solo builders create the equivalent of a boring documentary trailer when they could be making The Dark Knight.
This may sting, but you're losing downloads before people even hit the download button. That is why today’s lesson is all about pre-boarding in the app store.
The Onboarding Roadmap
Pre-boarding (today’s focus)
Welcome experience (onboarding)
Account creation (signing up)
First success moment (the final hook that starts that sweet addiction)
You Need a Better Movie Trailer
Your app store page is the make-or-break moment where browsers either become users or bounce to your competitor in 2.4 seconds flat.
That's why I reverse-engineered apps that actually dominate download charts and built a system that turns your app store into a conversion machine.
Why Apps Die in the Store
Here's what's happening: someone discovers your app, lands on your store page, and immediately starts the mental math of "Is this worth my time and phone storage?"
You have one shot to answer that question before they scroll away forever.
Most solo builders blow it by showing abstract concepts instead of concrete value. They lead with features nobody cares about instead of outcomes people desperately want.
For example, I see apps that say "Advanced AI-powered productivity suite" when they should say "Never miss a deadline again." One sounds like homework, the other sounds like sweet salvation.
The difference isn't necessarily the product, it's how you present it in those first seconds.
The Magic Sauce
Your Pre-Boarding Conversion System That Drives Downloads
Here's how I learned to turn app store browsers into paying customers, so you can stop watching people bounce:
1. Lead With Real App Screenshots
Show actual interfaces doing actual things. People want to see exactly what they're downloading, not stock photos of people smiling at phones.

Clear screenshots used by Duolingo and Notion.
2. Add Clear Value Headlines Per Screen
Each screenshot needs a headline that screams "This screen will solve [specific problem] for you." Make the benefit obvious.

Strava and Headspace use obvious outcomes that benefit the user
3. Weave Social Proof Into Visuals
Display user counts, ratings, or quick testimonials right in your screenshots. Social proof removes risk.

Yazio and Flightly use clear social proof to convert
4. Match Platform Expectations
iOS users expect clean minimalism, Android users expect material design. Don't fight the platform conventions.

Apple vs Google app stores
Copy What Works
A clear app store page eliminates the guesswork that makes people hit the back button.
You transform from another generic app in a crowded store to the obvious choice that makes people think "Finally, exactly what I needed."
So if you're watching your download numbers flatline while competitors with worse products are climbing the charts, stop treating your app store page like an afterthought and start treating it like your most important sales page.
That's how you turn browsers into users and users into revenue without spending another dollar on ads.
